Against Moab – Part 1

Jeremiah 48:1-6 Against Moab thus said the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Woe unto Nebo! for it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded and taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed. There shall be no more praise of Moab: in Heshbon they have devised evil against it; come, and let us cut it off from being a nation. Also thou shall be cut down, O Madmen; the sword shall pursue thee. A voice of crying shall be from Horonaim, spoiling and great destruction. Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard. For in the going up of Luhith continual weeping shall go up; for in the going down of Horonaim the enemies have heard a cry of destruction. Flee, save your lives, and be like the heath in the wilderness.

‘Against Moab thus said the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Woe unto Neho …’ This is the 84th prophecy in Jeremiah (48:1-47) verses 1-46 are fulfilled; verse 47 is unfulfilled.

Forty-four predictions are fulfilled: Woe is Nebo, for it will be spoiled (48:1). Kiriathaim will be confounded and taken. Misgab will be confounded and dismayed. There will be no more praise of Moab (48:2). In Heshbon they will plot the destruction of Moab as a nation. The sword will pursue the inhabitants of Madmen. There will be a great crying from Horonaim, spoiling, and great destruction (48:3, 5). Moab will be destroyed (48:4). Her little ones will cause a cry to be heard. There will be continual weeping going up to Luhith (48:5). Moab will be taken (48:7). Chemosh will go into captivity with his priests and princes. The spoiler will come upon every city, and none will escape (48:8). The valley and plain will also perish and be destroyed. Moab will flee and the cities will all be desolate (48:9). The deceitful worker will be cursed (48:10). The coward will be cursed. I will send upon Moab wanderers that will cause him to wander and empty his vessels and break their bottles (48:12). Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh (the national idol of protection), as Israel was ashamed of the golden calf at Bethel (48:13). Moab will be spoiled and gone from their cities (48:15). The chosen young men will be killed. The calamity of Moab is near, and his affliction comes fast (48:16). The inhabitants of Dibon and their glory will be humbled. The spoiler of Moab will come upon Dibon and destroy her strong holds (48:18). Refugees from Moab will pass by Aroer and inquire of the battle (48:19). Moab will be confounded and broken down (48:20). Judgment will come upon the plain country, Holon, Jahazah, Mephaath, Dibon, Nebo, Beth-diblathaim, Kiriathaim, Beth-gamul, Beth-meon, Kerioth, Bozrah, and upon all the cities of Moab, far and near (48:21-24).
