The Captivity of Jacob’s Tents

Jeremiah 30:18-20 Thus said the LORD; Behold, I will bring again the captivity of Jacob’s tents, and have mercy on his dwellingplaces; and the city shall be builded upon her own heap, and the palace shall remain after the manner thereof. And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small. Their children also shall be as aforetime, and their congregation shall be established before me, and I will punish all that oppress them.

‘The city shall be builded upon her own heap.’ This not only predicted the destruction of Jerusalem but also the rebuilding of the city upon its own heap, or original site – even before the destruction (31:38-39). This refers to the rebuilding of the city at the second coming of Christ, as also predicted in Ezekiel 48:30-35.

‘Them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry.’ Out of Jerusalem and the fortress of Jeremiah 30:18 will come joy and gladness.

‘Multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.’ God will multiply Israel in all coming ages, glorify them as a great nation, and they will not be anymore a small, despised, downtrodden people. Their children will be blessed as in days of old, and the congregation will be eternally established before God (30:20).

‘I will punish all that oppress them.’ This is the same as the original Abrahamic covenant (30:20 with Gen. 12:1-3).
