He Had Made the Earth

Jeremiah 51:14-19 The LORD of hosts had sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill thee with men, as with caterpillers; and they shall lift up a shout against thee. He had made the earth by his power, he had established the world by his wisdom, and had stretched out the heaven by his understanding. When he uttered his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens; and he caused the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth: he made lightnings with rain, and brougth forth the wind out of his treasures. Every man is brutish by his knowledge; every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them. They are vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish. The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all things: and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: the LORD of hosts is his name.

‘He had made the earth by his power, he had established the world by his wisdom, and had stretched out the heaven by his understanding.’ Sevenfold greatness of God (51:15-16): He has made the earth by His power. He has established the world by His wisdom. He has stretched out the heavens by His understanding. There is a multitude of waters from the heavens when He utters His voice. He causes the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes bolts of lightning with rain. He brings forth the wind out of His treasures.

1 Samuel 2:2 gives the threefold character and greatness of God: None as holy as the Lord. None are as great and powerful. None as solid, immovable and dependable.

Psalms 145 gives ten proofs of the greatness of God: He is great (145:3). He is great to be praised. His greatness is unsearchable. Every generation shall praise Your works (145:4). Every generation shall declare Your mighty acts (145:4, 6). I (David) will speak of the glorious honour of Your majesty (145:5). I (David) will speak of Your wonderful works (145:5, 6). All men shall speak of the might of Your terrible acts (145:6). They shall abundantly utter the memory of Your great goodness (145:7). They shall sing of Your righteousness.

‘The work of errors’ – The idols were the vanities of man and the work of errors, as here (51:17-18).

‘The portion of Jacob is not like them.’ The God who is the portion of Jacob is not like the idols made with the hands of men.
